If problems occur with MIDI programming or controlling the AMP1 (regardless of the model - AMP1 Silver Edition, AMP1 Mercury Edition or AMP1 Iridium Edition) with the BOSS MS-3, this can have various causes.

The problem is as follows: AMP1's MIDI learn function (press the BOOST button down until the REVERB button flashes) is activated. If a MIDI PC command is now sent to the AMP1 on MIDI channel 1 of the BOSS MS-3, nothing happens on the AMP1. The REVERB button continues to flash and goes out after approx. 10 seconds. No programming has taken place.

In most cases, the problem is caused by the fact that the MIDI controller is sending ambiguous or even multiple MIDI messages. The AMP1 only understands individual and unique MIDI commands. If an ambiguous command is sent, or several MIDI commands are sent one after the other, the AMP1 cannot process this and does not respond.

We can give you the following helpful tips for troubleshooting problems with MIDI handling of the AMP1 with the MS-3:

Manually assign a separate PC number to each patch

The following video explains very clearly how to control an external device with the BOSS MS-3 using a MIDI PC (Program Change). It is important that you manually give each patch its own PC number under “Patch MIDI 1”! If this is not done, the AMP1 does not receive a "new" PC command when switching and does not respond. In the example video, Patch 1 gets PC number 1, and Patch 2 gets PC number 2:

Change to another patch before activating MIDI LEARN

If you enable MIDI LEARN to save the current AMP1 settings to a specific patch on the MS-3, please switch to a different patch on the MS-3 before pressing the BOOST switch on the AMP1 to enable MIDI LEARN .

Here is an example: you want to save the settings of your AMP1 on footswitch no. 1 of the MS-3. In this case, please first press one of the other 3 footswitches (2 to 4) on the MS-3, then set the settings on the AMP1 that you want to save, then activate MIDI LEARN (keep BOOST pressed until REVERB flashes) and press then footswitch no. 1 on the MS-3.

Delete

If a footswitch is pressed on the MS-3 that has already been activated (i.e. when the same footswitch is pressed twice in a row), the MS-3 does not send a PC command. In order to send a PC command, patches have to be changed, i.e. you have to press a different footswitch than the one that is currently activated.

Switching off MIDI clock

Many BOSS MS-3 devices have MIDI clock switched on by default. This doesn't bother the AMP1 Silver Edition, but for the AMP1 Mercury Edition and the AMP1 Iridium Edition, the hidden MIDI clock signal is an additional, second MIDI signal in addition to the PC signal that it cannot process. The result: the amp does not react at all, or at least not as it should. If you switch off the MIDI clock, the problem is solved.
